Foreground segmentation using luminance contrast
نویسندگان
چکیده
The authors suggest the convenience of using luminance contrast for a normalised threshold in the foreground segmentation process for video-based surveillance applications. An individual pixel is part of the foreground when its contrast is greater than a given threshold. This method presents two major advantages: it simplifies the background model and increases the processing speed. The background model requires a single image, which may be updated in outdoors applications. No statistical information about the variation of each pixel value is needed. The algorithm runs faster in colour images because it operates with just one coordinate, luminance in YUV colour space, keeping colour information available for further use. The method has been tested in images from four different scenarios, indoors and outdoors and the results in two particular contexts, negative and colour contrast are discussed. Background-Foreground Segmentation Based on Dominant Motion Estimation and Static Segmentation
This paper addresses the problem of image segmentation using motion and luminance information. We use the dominant motion model to calculate both the background and foreground motion in a robust estimation framework and then combine it with the result of static segmentation using the watershed algorithm to segment the foreground from the background. In this paper, the previous pixelbased (or ov...

and key words In this article, we focus on the Hue Saturation Luminance colour space, known for its appropriate representation of the human vision, and we illustrate its interest in the segmentation of image data, both in the spatial and temporal dimensions. The HSL space, with its particular properties (one angular component, the hue, and two scalar components, the saturation and the luminance...
متن کاملPDR: A Performance Evaluation Method for Foreground-Background Segmentation Algorithms
We introduce a performance evaluation methodology called Perturbation Detection Rate (PDR) analysis for measuring performance of foreground-background segmentation. It has some advantages over the commonly used Receiver Operation Characteristics (ROC) analysis. Specifically, it does not require foreground targets or knowledge of foreground distributions. It measures the sensitivity of a backgro...
متن کاملTwo segmentation mechanisms with differential sensitivity for colour and luminance contrast
In a texture-segregation paradigm, subjects were asked to detect figures whose elements were segregated from background either because of temporal offset or because of differing orientations. Texture elements were either isoluminant or had high or low luminance contrast. At high luminance contrast, figures could be segregated both on the basis of orientation and temporal cues whereby temporal o...
متن کاملImage Segmentation Enhances Discrimination of Motion in Visual Noise
The primate visual system uses form cues-such as hue, contrast polarity, luminance, and texture-to segment complex retinal images into the constituent objects of the visual scene. We investigated whether segmentation of dynamic images on the basis of hue, luminance contrast polarity, or luminance contrast amplitude aids discrimination of motion direction. Human subjects viewed dynamic displays ...
